What each line means
- Format. Read from the first bytes, not the file name. A PNG renamed to .jpg is still a PNG, and portals that inspect the file will say so.
- Pixels. The size a viewer shows. Phone photos are often stored on their side with a rotation flag; both sizes are listed when they differ.
- File size. Raw bytes, then the same number divided by 1,000 (KB) and by 1,024 (KiB). A limit of “50 KB” can mean either, so a file that passes only one reading is a gamble. The 20 KB page explains the two conventions.
- DPI. A number written in the header (JFIF, EXIF or PNG). It does not change the pixels; portals that ask for “200 DPI” usually only read this field.
- Colour mode. CMYK files come from print workflows and are shown with wrong colours or refused by many upload previews; RGB is what portals expect.
- Coding. Baseline or progressive for JPG. A few older portals decode baseline only; a progressive file from a photo editor can fail there for no visible reason.
- Metadata and location. EXIF, XMP and similar blocks carry the camera model, the date and, for many phone photos, the GPS position. Location data is listed on its own line. Every SizePrep resize tool removes all metadata from its output.
Check against a form’s rules
Tick the accepted formats, enter the KB limits and the pixel rule (exact or a maximum) as the form states them. The verdict uses the same checks and wording as the resize tools: READY TO UPLOAD only when every rule you entered passes and the file opens in this browser; Technical checks passed with a manual item when a point could not be confirmed here (for example a HEIC that this browser cannot open); otherwise what failed and how to fix it. Nothing is downloaded from this page, because nothing was changed.
Fix it
When a check fails, the “Fix it” button opens the right SizePrep tool with the same rules already filled in: the pixels and KB resizer for a pixel rule, or the 20, 50 or 100 KB page for a size limit. The link carries the rules in its address, so you can also send it to someone else who has to meet the same form.
