Why application photos land near 50 KB
A passport-style photo is small in pixels (often 200 to 600 pixels on the longer side) and mostly one face on a plain background, so it compresses well. Many application portals therefore cap it at 50 KB, sometimes with a floor of 20 KB so that a file has enough detail to print. The tool starts at the pixel size you give it, or keeps the photo’s own size when you give none, and lowers the JPG quality only as far as the limit demands. Skin and hair keep their detail; the background is what gives way first.
Between 20 and 50 KB
When a form says “20 KB to 50 KB”, tap Change and type 20 as the minimum. SizePrep aims for the top of the window (about 45 to 48 KB) because that is where quality is highest, and it stays inside a safety margin under both ways of counting a kilobyte. A photo that comes out smaller than 20 KB, for example a tiny old scan, is grown back by raising the quality and the permitted dimensions, never by padding the file with junk bytes. If it still cannot reach the minimum, the result says so instead of handing you a file that might be rejected.
What SizePrep will not do to a face photo
- No retouching. The tool crops, resizes, rotates and compresses. It does not smooth skin, reshape features, apply filters or swap the background. Photo rules on most portals treat an edited face as a fabricated photo.
- Background stays yours. If the form wants a white or light background, take the photo against one. Check it by eye on the After preview; that is a manual check SizePrep never claims to have verified.
- Orientation is fixed, not judged. A phone photo carrying a rotation flag is turned upright in the pixels. Whether the head is centred and the eyes are open is still for you to look at.
Check the pixel size first
Forms that give a KB limit for the photo usually give a pixel size too, such as 200 by 230 or 3.5 by 4.5 cm at a stated DPI. Enter it in the width and height fields here, or use the pixels and KB resizer when you also want to choose which part of the photo is kept. KB alone is rarely the whole rule.
